How to Combat SAD (Seasonal Affective Depression)
Honestly, the cold always bothered me and if there isn't snow, there isn't any point. Anybody else feel this way?
It's starting to get dark earlier and longer, and I'm worried how all my fellow sun-lovers are handling the seasonal change. SAD (Seasonal Affective Depression) is real y'all and it affects so many. Scientists believe SAD is caused by a biochemical change in the brain, triggered by shorter days and reduced sunlight during the winter. In particular, two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and melatonin, have been linked to changes in mood, energy, and sleep patterns.
Symptoms include fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, and difficulty concentrating (among others). So what are some ways to combat this? Here are a few ideas!
1. Try and spend 10 minutes outdoors and in nature. Studies have shown even a short time walking in nature can give a significant boost to your mood and other mental benefits!
2. It’s my intention to get a light box this season! These lights mimic sunlight and is said to help combat SAD well.
3. Try an app for meditation and sleep. I’ve used Headspace app and love it!
4. Stock up on practical accessories to keep you warm. There’s nothing quite like being cold and miserable! Hand warmers, thick socks, and scarves are some of my favorite accessories
