10 Essentials for a Fashionable College Wardrobe

I go to a community college, and the truth is, you can really notice when someone has style. When you run into these people, you can't help but dissect what they're wearing and wonder if it'd be worth it to invest in the same pieces as them. What does it take to have good, functional style for running around campus? Have you ever wondered what was needed in your closet to make it more stylish? Sometimes all you need are a few pick-me-ups to add that splash of variety that will make your style stand out! With the spring semester starting up, here are my top ten picks as to what helps to make a fashionable wardrobe for college.

1. Tights
If you have a good variety of colored tights mixed with some neutral ones, you are well set for creating unique and eye catching outfits! Besides my own examples, check out Jessica of Midwest Muse and her amazing, creative collection of tights.

2. Perfect Fitting Jeans
Even if you're a strictly skirt/dress kind of gal, you need a good pair of jeans that fit you! It may take hours, day, or months to find them, but once you do, it's like finding your fashion soulmate! Also, try branching out and experiment with different colored and print ones.

3. Cozy Sweater
Okay, for this one, consider finding a cozy winter and summer sweater. For winter, you'll be wearing this staple all the time. They're easily remixable and can be paired with skirts, over dresses, and with pants. As for the summer version, think more like crochet - they'll be breezy and light and should be comfortable despite the heat!

4. Leather Jacket
I'm certain that everytime you see someone wearing a leather jacket, you automatically think they look cool. I mean, come on, it's the iconic look of the rebel kid! My tip is to invest in one that can easily be layered on top of other clothes, so nothing too tight.

5. Awesome Boots
There's nothing better to stomp around campus in than some rad boots. That's right, I said rad, because what else could you call these? Comfortable and stylish? That's what college style is all about!

6. Variety of Skirts
Having a few skirts is something I think is mandatory if you're looking to stand out in a sea of hoodies and rhinestone jeans. These will instantly add some polish to your look and also a touch of whimsy, depending on what style you prefer. Fitted bodycon skirt or flowy maxi skirt, you should have a couple different selections based on your style. Also, look at that photo on the far left - I'm wearing at least four of the essentials I'm listing today! Skirt, tights, sneakers, and a leather jacket.

7. A Versatile Dress
A good dress is the most versatile piece of clothing you can find. My suggestion is to find a pretty, neutral dress that you can layer with fun accessories to make it work as a top, skirt, or, well, a dress. This white dress I own is extremely versatile due to it's neutral color, but still a pretty item due to the ruffles and delicate features.

8. Denim Jacket
This works like jeans - a staple that can go with everything! Toss it on over a fancy dress to tone it down for day or wear it as an alternative for your leather jacket for a more casual vibe.

9. Stylish Sneakers
So like I said earlier, fashionable + comfy = perfect college style. Sneakers are a common staple in everyone's wardrobe, for good reason! Besides the classic Converse, try finding a pair that's unique in color or design, like my Inkkas!

10. Unique Accessories
These are truly the finishing touch to any outfit. If you have a good selection of accessories to choose from, you can really step your outfit up. From matching belts, bags, or interesting jewelry, you'll be sure to draw notice for your impeccable matching skills!

Well, what do you think? Any other essentials you have in your wardrobe? Please share in the comments below! If I get enough replies, I'd like to continue making lists like this one.
Hope this helps!

Great post, Linda! The only thing I would add is a lightweight, winter, statement coat. Everyone needs to stay warm but stylish, when walking from class to class, no?

a great post indeed, Linda! and what was my first thought when I saw this post? "WOW! her wardrobe must be bottomless, haha! ;)" but really, your wardrobe does seem like a bottomless one so it would be SUPER interesting to actually see it! oh and when it comes to my essentials I would add a sweatshirt and a classic shirt/blouse (patterned, colourful, plain white, whatever). those are the things I've been especially loving these months.
