All American Girl

Tank: Rue 21   Dress (worn as skirt): Target   Aviators: Philippines   Boots: c/o My Hot Shoes

"Very patriotic - nice!" an older gentleman commented on my outfit as I passed by.
Its true, its hard not to be patriotic when you're wearing a flag print tank and matching red boots. Besides, what's more American than a baseball field, right? I'm loving this outfit with this setting!

This is an old outfit I forgot to post in my "Spring Cleaning" post, but its what I wore during the last week of school. Nothing beats comfy but still stylish, right? I remember Kirsten saying, "You actually wore this? To school?"
When I nodded, she just sighed wistfully and said, "I wish I could do that. I don't think I'd have the guts."

It got me thinking about fashion and everyday life. How often do we pass up on the prettier clothes and think "Someone else could wear that - but not me."
Why is that? Why can't you wear that dress you've been eyeing or those shoes you've seen on others and loved? Why not give it a try?

I think too often (especially in a small town like where I live), we get intimidated by what others may think of us. We don't want to stand out or be creative. We want to blend in, to feel a sense of conformity with others. Its comfortable. Its safer. Its our silent way of feeling like we're a part of the community.
But honestly, if you have to dress like everyone else and stick to this unofficial uniform, what kind of community are you joining?

Believe me, I think its important to only wear what you're comfortable in, but I also think we shouldn't be afraid to try new things. After all, that's the original American spirit, right? Forge ahead fearlessly!

PS: For my next post, I've got a funny tale (and a few pictures) to show you of what's been going on at the apartment I'm staying at. All I can say is, who knew my dormant OCD gene would finally emerge?

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

I get what you are saying. I'm from Venezuela and here in latinoamerica people dont take many risks in fashion, most of girls just follow the local trend without really breaking the mold. When I go on vacations to USA I can see that girls dress really different and more edgy.

I honestly love this patriotic outfit! dont be afraid to wear what you want! you may find more people everyday giving you compliments!

This is a great patriotic look, loving the cute red boots and fringed bag, perfectly styled! I know what you mean about creatively dressing when you're from a small town, but we should be able to be comfortable enough to wear whatever tickles our fancy.

LOVE THIS. Your outfit is so 'rebel chic' and I love the spikes.

I love what you touched in your post. I have been diagnosed with anxiety (social anxiety to be exact) and I am constantly intimidated with what others think of me. I hate drawing attention to myself, and like what you said in the post, I often try to blend in. This obviously affects the clothes I wear haha. But I've been trying to branch out and do what I want to do, and wear what I find comfortable. This post has really helped me, and thank you for being so awesome and writing it out. It actually means a lot to someone like me :)

Ohmygosh!!!!! For the past couple weeks, everything patriotic has been a small obsession of mine: clothes, barbeques, even scrapbooking supplies at my work absolutely slay me!! This outfit is perfect!!!
AHHHHH I can't WAIT for the 4th and the fireworks and the family parties! Now I'm itching to go get that red and blue shirt on hold at my work...!!!
I can't wait to hear your story, too! :P

So edgy and chic Linda! Loving the fringe bag (:
This post really hit home (bahaha, I just realized that that's an unintentional pun since you're on a baseball field). I've always wanted to wear flower headbands in public, but I haven't yet because people might think I'm strange. When the time comes, I think I'll go for it now (:

With you on this whole post. Comfort yet stylish is the best! And it is hard to break out of what everyone is wearing, I know I couldn't till I got to college. But the good thing is once you do, you really stop second guessing yourself and wear whatever you want! Also to the outfit, you look very cute as an Americana inspired girl :)

Beautiful outfit and yes very patriotic! I love how you paired the setting with the outfit! Very classic and fun! And I agree, I live in a small town and everyone is scared of what everyone will think of them! And that's how I feel too, wear what you want because "those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind!" :)

You're totally right sometimes when we lived in a small town, we're afraid of tryin new things in this case in dressing, we would afraid of some others thought, and made us stuck and never gave a try to wear something we wanted. True true true !

shamuboo said...

Really clever tying in your theme with your outfit. Freedom and patriotism. Freedom to be you in the most basic freedom of all and dressing how you want is certainly a part of that. And what a sweet outfit. That is a great top for you, we have those oh-so-cute legs again and bright red booties (and you are totally pulling them off :D) My fave pic is the close one with those lovely eyes of yours. Wonderful shots and thoughts, dear one.

Love your red boots! You're right too, it's important to wear what you feel comfortable in and give things a go. At the end of the day, it's only clothes! As long as all of the essential parts are covered you're not gonna break any laws or injure someone with what you wear. It's something we can have fun with, be daring with, or just be comfortable with and there is no right or wrong :)

I understand what you're saying about small towns and "small town outfits". I live in a very small town (5000 people maybe) and most of those people only wear grey and black, sweatpants etc. but I don't mind people watching me if they want to. it's like a runway here, haha.
so you rock on and do your thing, Linda because that's what makes you "YOU". and I love seeing those colourful, unique outfits like this patriotic one.

Your'e so right about trying the things you never thought of trying before--okay so I used to be so SCARED about wearing socks with my boots and oxfords in public, but now it's like, all I wear, hahaha. I started with more subtle colors but now I've got the whole rainbow almost (still searching for some nice hot pink ones though!). And people comment on how they think it's cute and think they wish they could "pull it off" and all I think is dude... you could pull it off I just tried and now I'm "used to it" you know?

Okay, so about you rpictures now lol lol I ramble too much o 3o~ oh GOSH I love that you went to the baseball field to take these pictures. I especially love that photo of you where you're really tiny in the center and the fence is towering over you. Awesome size ratio!

Those booties are rad. I love the little tassels on them and you just look like such a hardcore american diva punk here. :)

Ashley said...

These photos are just so cool! I love the theme going on here! I used to be all about avoiding patriotic colors together. I'm not sure why, as they look amazing together and now I'm totally obsessed with rocking Flag inspired items (I'm on the hunt for the perfect flag shorts!). Thanks for giving me more inspiration for how seriously awesome a patriotic look can be!!!!!

Such true words my friend. In my city, wearing heels and lipstick, dressing fashionable - is often seen as over-dressing so believe me I get the stares whenever I'm out and about. But I like to have fun my with clothes and get dressed so I don't care. If anything maybe I'll inspire someone else to do the same. If not, at least I'm doing me.

You look adorable - my fav is the close-up shot. You've got great sparkle in those eyes. ;)

i love how fun this outfit is! I think as a blogger you kind of become desensitised to some of the things people may consider outrageous or require confidence to wear because you see some way crazier stuff in the blogosphere and if they can rock it we can rock something thats just a little stretch. people often say "i could never wear that" and I agree with you, Why Not!

"If you have to dress like everyone else and stick to this unofficial uniform, what kind of community are you joining?" So true. That was my favorite line.

I struggle with this desire to dress like I I really want to while blending in literally everyday. Like today. I'm wearing a teal skirt (you'd love it) with a beige top and it's very cute, so I decided to wear gold metallic flats instead of the beige pumps I originally wanted to wear them with. I always find myself toning down my outfits for school and for work. I'm not sure to what extent it's a genuine effort to be appropriate vs. to blend in. I think I'll cover this in the outfit post for today's outfit. Seems like a good thing to cover.

Well said my smart Linda! Since I have been more focussing on fashion in my blog posts and reading more fashion blogs, I have become more brave in some things; purple lipstick as an example. I think one big reason peeps conform is because of money. Since I have been shopping at thrift/second hand stores I have much more creativity with color and style because I know I am only spending a few dollars on my dare. That could be a concept to discuss in the future you talented one. OCD did you say? I'm there.

ooh loving this patriotic look!! and i totally agree with you!! in high school it took me a while to really wear what I wanted and not let the fear of of people judging what you are wearing consume me. After my first year in college I found my self in the same position that I was in in the beginning of high school. especially being surrounded by fashion students who are some of the best dressed college students around, it was really daunting to dress how i wanted. i was constantly looking at everyone around and saying to myself i could never wear that or pull it off as well as they do. but this hesitance should never stop you from wearing whatever you want! :) wonderful post linda!! :)

I love that tank top and those red boots are AWESOME!! I love them! And yes, I think when you are younger, it takes a lot to want to stand out from the crowd. But as you get older, you pay less and less attention to what other people think and then it becomes easier. :) <3

this outfit is so edgy and cool! and haha yes definitely a little patriotic ;) but in a totally fashion trendy way!

Dude, you are like the most awesome chick ever. (I seriously mean that and not just because you're always such a dear and still talk to me after I've been so neglectful.) I really like patrotic outfits and I think most people enjoy them, so I really like that you were brave enough to just go for it with this outfit. It's so true what you said about being brave enough to just wear stuff, my town is small as well and so not into fashion but hey, life is too short not to dress cute. (And now I feel brave enough to wear that awesome tulle skirt that's been sitting in the closet.)
