Dress Up

Dresses & Occasion

Matching your party dress and occasion can be a challenge. You don’t want to be overdressed but
at the same time being underdressed can be equally as embarrassing. Here are some helpful tips
to try and help you navigate the minefield that ensues when choosing dresses online or on the
high street.

Garden Party

If you’re going to a garden party, you don’t want to wear something too dressy. A brightly
coloured, above the knee dress will always reflect a summer feel, while also highlighting your

Maybe opting for something fairly covering would be a good idea in order to avoid having to
constantly reapply sunscreen and ensuring that you won’t end up with sunburn. Something with a
high neckline also ensures that you will not fall out of your dress and create a highly embarrassing
scene which no-one will ever forget.

As it’s likely to be summer when you are having a garden party (unless you are very brave and are
risking it in autumn), you may want to opt for a floaty dress to ensure that you remain cool and
calm while having fun in the sun.

Cocktail Party

Cocktail dresses really do vary depending on individual preference. Most are short, falling just
above the knee with a sweetheart neckline, so if you want to go with what most people will be
wearing, one of these style dresses may be the option for you.

However, there are also cocktail dresses with one shoulder and so if you want something that
is more supportive, this may be the option for you. A lot of people prefer darker, conservative
colours for this style of dress but there are plenty of bolder options on offer too.

Bright colours are completely acceptable for a wedding, allowing your personality to shine
through. You want to ensure that you wear a dress that is comfortable for you to be in for most of
the day (and night) and also something that you’ll be able to dance in!

It may be best to wear something made of a chiffon or a silky material to ensure that you remain
cool during the day and you want to make sure that your dress isn’t inappropriately short or low
cut. At a wedding, you really don’t want to be the woman that steals the attention away from the
bride so keep this in mind when picking out your dress.
